Threat against line west of Phoenix. February 25th, 1995
According to Jay Myers, “Well-placed sources indicate that Southern Pacific’s rails west of Phoenix may be lifted by the end of this year.”Unsure of Amtrak’s priorities, ARPA may have to champion this issue. ARPA’s #1 priority is to convince SP not to abandon the line, and if that effort fails, to convince Amtrak to fight for it. Failing that, convince government (State, county) to fight for preservation of the line. Failing that, convince local government to preserve right of way. Somewhere in this list of options is to induce a short line to buy the line.
