TUCSON: Streetcar seen as Development Catalyst

From Tucson Downtown Alliance

The May 16 RTA election provided $87 million in funding for the development of a Modern Streetcar Circulator to link Downtown with the University of Arizona. RTA funding will cover about half the capital costs and several years of operating expenses.

If all goes well with securing the additional funding that is needed from the federal Small Starts program or through other sources, the Streetcar could be operational by 2010.

Several Downtown advocates see the Modern Streetcar as a significant catalyst for private mixed-use development along the entire 3.6-mile proposed corridor. Among these are Downtown developers such as Jerry Dixon (Mercado at Menlo District), Roger Karber (Hotel Arizona redevelopment), and Matt Brown of Williams and Dame Development (Depot Plaza and 256-278 E. Congress block redevelopment).
