METRO [Valley Metro Rail], in co-operation with the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) is conducting a study to analyze potential high capacity transit improvementsin the cities of Tempe and Chandler
…The Tempe South study is funded by the Proposition 400 half-cent transportation sales tax extension approved by Maricopa County voters in 2004, and is contained in the adopted Regional Transportation Plan as a component of the 57-mile high capacity transit / light rail network to be implemented by 2026…
Tier I selection is nearly complete, and recommended for study in Tier II are:
- Commuter Rail in the UPRR Corridor
- Bus Rapid Transit in the UPRRCorridor
- BRT on Mill Avenue
- Modern Streetcar on Mill Avenue
- LRT [hybrid LRT/Modern Streetcar] or Streetcar on Rural Road
- BRT on Rural Road

Light-rail system test brings mixed reactions May 9th, 2008
Light rail made its Tempe debut Wednesday and drew public reactions varying from disgust to delight.
A single train crossed Town Lake shortly after 1 p.m. and was tested throughout the afternoon along the rail track that cuts through downtown Tempe, across Mill Avenue and near Wells Fargo Arena.

ARPA Members and Guests are invited to attend the Southern Arizona ARPA Membership Meeting in the Ventana Room of the Marriott University Park Hotel, 880 East 2nd Street in Tucson on Saturday, 10 May 2008.
The ARPA Board of Directors will meet at 10AM, which you are welcome to attend.
The program will begin at 12:30. Shellie Ginn of the City of Tucson DOT will present the current status of planning for the Tucson Modern Streetcar line approved by voters in 2006. ARPA President Rob Bohannan will tell us of the current discussions at the state level for Tucson-Phoenix passenger trains. We will also hear an update on Phoenix’s light rail which will open by the end of this year.
After the meeting, you may visit the Southern Arizona Transportation Museum with a ride on the Old Pueblo Trolley streetcar.
